Those Tiny Black Specks on Your Siding Might Be Artillery Fungus
It’s easy to mistake for dirt, but artillery fungus behaves completely differently — and it’s genuinely hard to remove.
What It Actually Is
Artillery fungus grows in mulch beds and, true to its name, shoots small spore masses onto nearby surfaces — typically siding, cars, and window screens within a few feet of the mulch. Each speck bonds tightly to the surface it lands on.
Why Standard Cleaning Doesn’t Fully Remove It
Because the spores bond so firmly, pressure washing and standard cleaning solution can lighten the appearance but often won’t fully remove every speck. In some cases, affected siding may need spot treatment or, in persistent cases, repainting to fully resolve.
Reducing Future Spore Contact
Switching from wood mulch to a different ground cover near the foundation, or maintaining distance between mulch beds and siding, reduces how much artillery fungus contact happens going forward.
